SUMMARY:Mini-World Cup 2018 Soccer Tournament
DESCRIPTION:The Mini-World Cup is an annual Vancouver Island soccer tournament for players 7-10 years old from the Island\, the Lower Mainland\, and across BC. The host community changes every year – and this year\, it’s Ladysmith’s turn! \nEach team in the tournament represents a specific country\, and the highlight of the weekend is the “Parade of Nations” where the kids show off their creativity with costumes\, flags and team cheers! \nIn addition to the actual soccer games\, there will be camping at Transfer Beach\, as well as food trucks and other vendors at game venues. We’re also planning a pool party\, a spaghetti dinner\, and a pancake breakfast – and of course\, we haven’t forgotten the Fun Zone bouncy castles that were so popular last time around! \nWhen we hosted this tournament in 2012\, we had over 1\,000 players (and their families) visit our town – and we expect the same in 2018! SUMMARY:RCL Branch 171 Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:There will be a Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony on Sunday\, May 6th\, at 11 a.m. at the Ladysmith Cenotaph. \nFull dress please.\n \nThe Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II\, running from 1939 to the defeat of Germany in 1945. It was a major part of the Naval history of World War II. At its core was the Allied naval blockade of Germany\, announced the day after the declaration of war\, and Germany’s subsequent counter-blockade. It was at its height from mid-1940 through to the end of 1943. \nThe Battle of the Atlantic pitted U-boats and other warships of the Kriegsmarine (German navy) and aircraft of the Luftwaffe (German air force) against the Royal Canadian Navy\, Royal Navy\, United States Navy and Allied merchant shipping. \nThe convoys\, coming mainly from North America and predominantly going to the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union\, were protected for the most part by the British and Canadian navies and air forces. These forces were aided by ships and aircraft of the United States beginning September 13\, 1941. The Germans were joined by submarines of the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina) after their Axis ally Italy entered the war on June 10\, 1940.
