YES BioBlitz 2023: Press Release:

The Yellow Point Ecological Society (YES) is proud to announce its 3rd Annual BioBlitz, a family-fun spring event for the Ladysmith/South Nanaimo and surrounding area on April 28 to May 2.

What is a BioBlitz, you ask? A BioBlitz can be described as “an intense community engagement to identify as many wild plants, animals, and fungi as possible in a designated area.” In other words, the goal of our BioBlitz is to engage as many local people to record as many flora and fauna as possible during the four-day event.

Below is a map of the area for the Bioblitz that includes Ladysmith, South Nanaimo, Yellow Point, Cassidy, and our coastal waters to the east.

To join the fun, download the iNaturalist app on your phone, “join” the YESBioBlitz2023 project and start taking pictures of any life form–alive or dead, native or non-native–and try and identify what you’ve seen. When you enter the photo, Naturalist will offer suggestions and other iNaturalist users will help identify your find.

Choose your time from dawn ‘til dusk. Or if you are a night owl join them and record the sound on the app. Only photos taken during the designated dates and times (6 AM on April 28 to 8 PM on May 1st) and in the area designated on the map will count towards our YES BioBlitz.

And wait! Prizes will be awarded by YES for the most, the best, and the zaniest entries from those who join the project on iNaturalist.

A special welcome is extended to local schools, Stz’uminus and other First Nation members to join us in this fun family-friendly event.
